There is no doubt that the electric models from Tesla have no direct competitors on the market, however, there is one particular vehicle that seems to pick up the pace; and that one is no other than the brand-new 2022 IONIQ 5 from Hyundai. It will be available on the Australian market as well, with prices to start from $71,900.
The downside is that only 400 vehicles will be available at the moment, and each buyer will have to secure the order with a $2,000 deposit. However, if there will be more interest in this particular model, Hyundai Australia will cover the demand with an extra of 11,000 vehicles. For the moment, the model is available for online sales, but from October 13, the model will also be available to local representatives around the country.
Speaking of the arrival of the new IONIQ 5 in Australia, Hyundai CEO, Jun Heo stated in a press conference that the model would be a real blast, as it represents “the leading edge in zero-emissions battery-electric vehicles.”
So, two variants are up for grabs. The entry-level $71,900 RWD with 160kW, as well as the more powerful AWD with 225kW. Customers will be getting the latter for around $75,900. Rumors also have it that a much more potent N version will be around the corner soon.
Now, let`s take a look at the two variants.
The entry-level is equipped with an electric motor positioned at the rear and which outputs 160kW. It thus covers 451 km, with a claimed 0 to 100 km/h run in 7.4 seconds. Once the battery runs out, you will need around 6 hours to recharge the electric motor from 10 to 80 percent, with the use of a 10.5kW AC charger.
On the other hand, the AWD variant is much more potent, as it develops 225kW and 605 Nm of torque. This is actually a combined output, as it features two electric motors, positioned both at the front as well at the rear axle. The front one outputs 70kW, while the rear does all the hard work with 155kW. The combined power helps the car to reach 100 km/h in a good 5.2 seconds. As for mile-range, the flagship can run around 430 km/h, being helped by a 72.6 kWh battery.
Both the entry-level and the top-of-the-line IONIQ 5 AWD will be offered with a Vehicle-to-Load system, a 3.6kW output for charging accessories and other external devices, as well as 400-volt and 800-volt charging platforms, with up to 350kW DC ultra-fast charging features.
Moving inside the car, you will find a cabin surrounded by plenty of high-tech gadgets and other cools stuff. You can first see the massive 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster which goes hand-in-hand with a touch-screen and adds other cool features like dual-zone climate, eight-speaker Bose sound system coming as standard, heated front and rear seats and ventilation for the front ones, power-adjustable front seats, and much more.
The safety package being offered on both variants is called SmartSense and offers a wide variety of safety gizmos coming as standard. These refer to rear cross-traffic alert, surround-view parking camera, safe exit assist, lane, and blind-spot assistance, junction turning, evasive steering assist for the autonomous emergency braking. The latter would be a premiere on an electric vehicle from Hyundai.
The exterior stands out from the crowd with the imposing 20-inch alloy wheels that complements the car`s futuristic design. All-in-one, this is an extraordinary piece of engineering that will definitely comply with your highest demands when it comes to electric vehicles.
