The 1200A jumper starter in this review was provided to Automoblog by Shell. The opinions below are my own based on my personal experience with the product.

The 1200A Shell Portable Jump Starter and other similar units provide the convenience of on-demand power when your car battery dies. Instead of waiting on a friend with jumper cables or for roadside assistance, you pop the hood, hook the unit to your battery, and fire up your car. Things like a Shell jump starter are great for a winter emergency kit (see our winter driving guide for what to put in your kit).

This review covers the 1200A Shell Portable Jump Starter (16,000 mAh), available for $130 on Amazon (as of this writing). The 1200A will handle all passenger vehicles, including sedans, trucks, SUVs, and minivans. It can also jump vehicles with smaller displacement diesel engines (up to 3.0-liters).

By contrast, the 800A version (12,000 mAh) of this Shell jump starter is $40 less on Amazon. The question is, do you need to spend the extra money for the 1200A? To help answer that, we will take a few moments to go through the 1200A version of this Shell portable jump starter, then compare and contrast it with the 800A version.

What Comes In The Box?

The 1200A Shell Portable Jump Starter comes with jumper cables, a car charger (2.4A output), one USB-A to Micro USB cable, one Type-C to Type-C USB cable, an owner’s manual, product warranty registration card, and a carrying case.

The unit itself includes a built-in LED flashlight and a charging bank, both of which are helpful. The charging bank has two USB-A ports, an input/output Type-C port, and a micro USB port. The 12V jump port, where you connect the cables, is just to the side of the power button and battery level indicator (battery level for the Shell unit, not your car battery).

Shell recommends charging the unit immediately after purchase, after each use, or every three months to prolong the internal battery life. To charge, connect the included Type-C cable to a USB power adaptor and plug it in. If you are on the go, you can charge the unit via the included car charger.

1200A Shell Portable Jump Starter Specs

  • Amperage: 1200 amps

Jumper Cable Connector & Status Indicators

A black casing, complete with a status indicator light and a boost button, encloses the jumper cable connector (look for the little blue piece on the end of the casing that plugs into the actual Shell unit). When you attach the jumper cables to the Shell unit, the status indicator will blink in green. Once connected to your car battery, that light will turn solid, indicating you are okay to proceed with the jump start. Shell recommends not attempting to jump your vehicle more than four consecutive times.

If there is an issue with the connection, the Shell portable jump starter will let you know beforehand with visible and audible cues. For example, if the green light is off and there is a continuous beeping, it could mean one of several things, including a loose connection or reverse polarity (the positive and negative clamps of the unit are connected to the wrong terminals on the battery). There are additional notifications if the jump starter is running too hot or at risk of short-circuiting.

The only downfall here is the length of the jumper cables themselves or lack thereof. Even a slight increase would be beneficial, especially as there is enough room inside the carrying case to accommodate longer cables. If your battery is tucked away under the hood, you might have to get creative in how you maneuver the unit with its shorter cables.

1200A Shell Portable Jump Starter.
The battery (upper right-hand corner) in our 2019 Toyota Corolla is near the firewall, making it harder to reach with the shorter cables of the Shell portable jump starter. Photo: Alex Hartman.

Boost Button

The Boost feature generates the highest possible current, but Shell recommends using this only when absolutely necessary. It’s advisable to attach the clamps first to your battery, then press the Boost button on the jumper cable connector. Doing this will lessen the chances of accidentally touching the clamps (which will give off a spark) and damaging either the unit or your vehicle’s electrical system (or both).

If your car still does not start after using the Boost feature, it’s best to call a tow truck and talk with your mechanic.

Charging Bank & Flashlight

You can power other mobile devices with the included USB cords via the unit’s charging bank. During an emergency, the integrated charging bank will be worth its weight in gold. If you end up stranded due to a blizzard or car trouble, you can easily charge your phone or tablet with the 1200A Shell Portable Jump Starter.

Likewise, the unit includes a built-in flashlight with four settings: a standard light, white floodlight, a red strobe, and an SOS flash. Like the device charging capability, the flashlight settings would be invaluable during an emergency.

800A Verus 1200A: Which One Is Best?

The 800A and the 1200A Shell Portable Jump Starters are similar in a lot of ways. Like the 1200A, the 800A has the flashlight and charging bank in case of an emergency, reverse polarity and overheat notifications, and a carrying case. Both units can handle a variety of other vehicles too, including motorcycles, boats, campers, and snowmobiles.

Here is a quick look at the key differences between the two units:

Capacity & Capability

The 1200A Shell Portable Jump Starter offers 16,000 mAh versus the 800A at 12,000 mAh. This is the most important difference between the two units.

The letters “mAh” stand for milliampere-hour, a standard unit of measurement that represents how long a battery can discharge its stored energy (i.e. how long it can last). On average, higher mAh is associated with longer battery life and more overall capability.

In terms of capability, the higher mAh of the 1200A unit allows it to jump gasoline engines as large as 7.0-liters, whereas the 800A will not handle anything over 6.0-liters. Likewise, the 1200A unit will accommodate diesel engines up to 3.0-liters. However, the 800A cannot jump a diesel engine over 2.0-liters in displacement.

If you drive a larger truck with either a Duramax, Power Stroke, or Cummins, neither the 800A nor 1200A will cut the mustard. Consider upgrading to this Shell Rotella unit instead.

Size

The 800A is smaller than the 1200A (2.42 lbs. versus 3.1 lbs.), making it easier to stow.

Charging Time

Given its smaller size, the 800A will charge anywhere from an hour and a half to two and a half hours quicker than the larger 1200A. However, the 2.4A car charger only comes with the 1200A jump starter.

Making The Right Choice

Some of this will come down to necessity. For example, if you own a late-model GM truck or an SUV with the 3.0-liter Duramax, or a late-model F-150 with the 3.0-liter Power Stroke, the 800A may not be enough if you need a jump. In that case, the 1200A is well worth the extra $40.

The 1200A jump starter, with its higher mAh, will have a longer internal battery life, meaning it will better supply the necessary juice to your mobile devices via the charging bank in an emergency. That, too, could be well worth the extra $40, especially during the winter. The flashlight and emergency SOS lights will run for longer too.

On the other hand, if you have a “regular old” sedan or SUV, the 800A Shell jump starter will do the trick. You can save the money – just make sure all of your devices are charged before you leave home.

As of this writing, you can grab the 1200A Shell Portable Jump Starter on Amazon for $130 or the 800A for $90.

1200A Shell Portable Jump Starter
92/100 Our Score

The 1200A Shell Portable Jump Starter will help you out of a jam when your car battery dies. Suitable for gasoline vehicles up to 7.0-liters and diesel engines up to 3.0-liters, this Shell jump starter is complete with an external flashlight and integrated charging bank for your mobile devices.

The 1200A Shell Portable Jump Starter comes with a two-year warranty.

BlueSky Auto Finance Review
In Our Opinion:
If you are looking for a bad credit auto loan, BlueSky Auto Finance is an option to consider. The auto loan provider may not be the right option, though. We recommend comparing auto loan companies to find the right choice for your auto financing needs.

If you have poor credit, getting approved for an auto loan can be tough. BlueSky Auto Finance might be able to help, though. The company specializes in offering auto loans to people regardless of their credit history. But while BlueSky may be opening doors for some borrowers, do BlueSky Auto Finance reviews and other factors suggest the company is the best choice?

In this review, we’ll look at BlueSky auto loans as well as BlueSky Auto Finance’s loan terms and lowest possible interest rate. Our automotive experts have also combed the auto financing industry to find the best auto loan companies, and we’ll give our recommendations on where to find the best rates for bad credit auto loans.

BlueSky Auto Finance: What You Need To Know

BlueSky Auto Finance bills itself as a customer-focused option for consumers looking for everything from car insurance to extended auto warranties to vehicle financing. The San Ramon, California-based company began in 2004 with a group of experienced auto finance workers who believed they understood the pitfalls of trying to secure a loan with bad credit.

Of particular note is that BlueSky Auto Finance offers a loan calculator tool that allows borrowers to compare rates among the auto finance providers in its network of car dealerships and lenders.

Terms on BlueSky Auto Loans

Besides offering cash and personal loans, BlueSky Auto Finance focuses on auto financing for borrowers with all types of credit. Here is an overview of the terms for BlueSky auto loans:

  • Loan length – 24 to 72 months
  • Origination fee – Varies by lender
  • Late payment fee – Varies by lender
  • Prepayment penalty fee – Varies by lender
  • Annual percentage rate (APR) range – Starts at 3.99% (depends on credit score)
  • General loan amount – $8,000 to $30,000 (you also have the option to request an amount “under $8,000” or “over $30,000”)

New & Used Car Loans

BlueSky Auto Finance offers auto loans for both new cars and used vehicles. The company’s website doesn’t disclose any limitations on what vehicle brands are eligible but lets borrowers specify their automaker and model preferences.

Below are some of the financial services BlueSky offers:

  • No-money-down options
  • Loan amounts up to $30,000 or more
  • Access to funds as soon as 24 hours

Refinance BlueSky Auto Loans

For customers unhappy with their current loan rates, BlueSky Auto refinances certain vehicles. Here are the minimum requirements the lending platform outlines for auto refinancing:

  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • No current bankruptcies
  • Vehicle no older than 8 years
  • Up to 100,000 miles on vehicle
  • Minimum gross income of $1,800 per month

Applying for a BlueSky Auto Finance Loan

Using BlueSky Auto Finance’s loan comparison tool is a quick, hassle-free process and takes less than five minutes to complete. Here is an overview of the information you’ll be required to provide during BlueSky’s auto loan application process:

  • Bankruptcy status
  • Desired loan amount
  • Social Security number
  • Employment information
  • General contact information
  • Vehicles you’re interested in
  • Credit score estimate (good, bad, or fair)
  • Other monthly payments (rent or mortgage)
BlueSky Auto Loan Details
Minimum Credit Score Accepts most credit types
Minimum Income $450 per week
Application Fee Free

BlueSky says there are no service fees for any of the financing offers on its website and that borrowers are under no obligation to accept BlueSky auto loan offers. However, the company’s website mentions that related finance costs from participating lenders and dealers vary depending on credit score.

It’s important to understand that applying with BlueSky isn’t actually applying for a loan. As a potential borrower, you’re just providing your information to survey loan amounts you could obtain through BlueSky’s network of auto loan providers. It usually takes 24 to 72 hours to get an answer on loan pre-approval.

BlueSky Auto Finance Reviews

BlueSky Auto Finance reviews are few and far between. The company is Better Business Bureau (BBB) accredited and has an A+ rating but only three customer reviews on the BBB website. BlueSky averaged a 1.0 out of 5 stars after three customer reviews.

Here are two of the BlueSky Auto Finance reviews we found on the BBB site:

“This company ran my credit without my knowledge or me applying for [a loan]. Be careful of this company!”
– Kelly C. via BBB

“[BlueSky Auto] sent out my information to multiple dealerships. I did not apply for anything with BlueSky Auto Finance or any auto loan company, as I am not in the market to buy a car. I have left multiple voicemails on their phone (which is never answered by anyone).”
– Brooke T. via BBB

The Bottom Line: BlueSky Auto Loans

BlueSky Auto Finance is likely not the best choice for anyone with good credit because those borrowers can likely find better interest rates elsewhere. Drivers with poor credit looking for auto loan services might find BlueSky to be an option worth considering, but there’s no guarantee you’ll find the vehicle you’re looking for with a BlueSky auto loan. You’re also not assured a certain auto loan rate, as 3.99% is just the starting APR.

Benefits of BlueSky Auto Loans Downsides of BlueSky Auto Loans
Accepts most credit types Limited selection
Low starting APR No loan details before applying
No fees No mobile app
A+ from the BBB Potential for high APR depending on credit

Other Options for Bad Credit Auto Loans

Our team reviewed lenders with the best auto loan rates and found several reputable companies that offer bad credit car loans. The providers listed below might be better choices for you than BlueSky Auto Finance, but you can make that judgment based on your own findings and the information we’ve provided on BlueSky auto loans.

Bad Credit Auto Loan Company Minimum Credit Score Required Loan Amounts Minimum Annual Income
myAutoloan.com 575 $8,000 to $99,000 $21,000
Capital One None $4,000 to $75,000 $18,000
Auto Credit Express None $5,000 to $45,000 $18,000
Ally Clearlane 580 $10,000 to $80,000 $21,600
Carvana None $1,000 to $85,000 $10,000
Vroom None $5,000 to $100,000 $21,600
Credit Acceptance Corp None Determined by dealer Not specified

Similar to shopping for car insurance, doing research can help you find the best rate on an auto loan. We suggest getting car financing costs from multiple lenders to see which company offers the lowest interest rates. You can also consider increasing your down payment to build equity in your vehicle quickly. Paying more up front also means you don’t lose as much money as the vehicle depreciates.

FAQ: BlueSky Auto Finance

How does BlueSky Auto Finance work?

BlueSky is a lending platform that connects consumers seeking auto loans to lenders. The company doesn’t provide auto financing itself but allows borrowers to compare loan options from several lenders and car dealers in one portal.

What is BlueSky auto insurance?

Similar to its lending comparison tool, BlueSky Auto Finance lets consumers compare quotes from car insurance companies.

What is the best company to finance a car with?

The best company for auto financing will depend on the needs of the consumer, their credit score, and the vehicle they are looking to purchase. If credit isn’t a concern, our research shows PenFed Credit Union, Bank of America, myAutoloan.com, Consumers Credit Union, and LightStream to be the lenders with the best auto loan rates.

2022 Chevy Tahoe & Suburban Quick Overview: Engine Specs, Interior Tech, Safety Features & More

The 2022 Chevy Tahoe and Suburban will receive more of the good stuff for the new model year. This includes a host of tech and connectivity tools, additional standard safety features, and more powertrain options. New exterior colors across the lineup include Evergreen Gray Metallic, Auburn Metallic, and Dark Ash Metallic. According to Chevrolet, the 2022 Tahoe and Suburban are designed to provide plenty of capability and interior space for road trips both near and far.

“Chevrolet keeps innovating with these popular full-size SUVs, and it’s part of the formula that makes them segment leaders,” added Kelly MacDonald, director of Chevrolet Truck Marketing.

Tahoe vs. Suburban: Which One Is Better?

One common question people tend to ask is which one is right for them. Should they go for the Tahoe, or is there an advantage in having a Suburban? In this overview, we are covering the Tahoe and Suburban simultaneously, as many of the new updates for 2022 apply to both vehicles. For example, the interior technology is the same between the Tahoe and Suburban. And in terms of the powertrain, there are only marginal differences in fuel economy. That said, it might be best to consider what your daily driving habits are like.

“Suburban drivers tend to buy out of necessity because they have a large family that requires using the total seating capacity, or have a hobby that requires the full cargo space,” explained Monte Doran, Senior Manager, GM Canada Corporate and Internal Communications. “Tahoe drivers tend to have smaller families and only occasionally use the third row. But they still want the cargo capability and towing ability.”

There is also a slight price difference, which may influence your decision. The starting MSRP figures are not yet available for the 2022 Tahoe and Suburban, but the 2021 Tahoe starts at $49,600. By contrast, the 2021 Suburban starts at $52,300. We expect those figures to stay in that neighborhood for the 2022 models.

Let’s take a closer look at what the Tahoe and Suburban will offer for the 2022 model year.

Engine & Powertrain Options

The 5.3 V8, an engine every Chevy fan will recognize, is standard for the Tahoe and Suburban LS, LT, Z71, RST, and Premier. The optional Duramax 3.0-liter turbo-diesel is available on all models except the Z71. The Duramax became an option for the 2021 Tahoe and Suburban, and we are glad to see it return for the 2022 model year. “The new Duramax engine is fuel-efficient, which you expect for a diesel, but it is also refined and fun to drive,” Doran added.

The 6.2 V8 returns to the Tahoe and Suburban lineup, complete with a dual exhaust system and GM’s Dynamic Fuel Management technology (i.e. cylinder shutdown). The 6.2 is standard for the High Country but available for RST, Z71, and Premier models.

Each engine is attached to a 10-speed automatic; an electronic limited-slip differential is available for the Z71. When taking a closer look at the charts below, you can see how almost everything is the same between the two vehicles, minus the negligible differences in fuel economy.

2022 Chevy Tahoe

Engine Horsepower Torque Fuel Economy
5.3 V8 355 383 lb-ft. 15/20 city/highway (2WD & 4WD)
6.2 V8 420 460 lb-ft. 14/20 city/highway: 2WD
13/19 city/highway: 4WD
3.0L Duramax 277 460 lb-ft. 21/28 city/highway: 2WD
20/26 city/highway: 4WD

The Tahoe’s max towing capacity is 8,400 lbs. when properly equipped (5.3 V8 with the NHT trailering package).

2022 Chevy Suburban

Engine Horsepower Torque Fuel Economy
5.3 V8 355 383 lb-ft. 15/20 city/highway: 2WD
15/19 city/highway: 4WD
6.2 V8 420 460 lb-ft. 14/20 city/highway: 2WD
13/19 city/highway: 4WD
3.0L Duramax 277 460 lb-ft. 21/27 city/highway: 2WD
20/26 city/highway: 4WD

The Suburban’s max towing capacity is 8,300 lbs. when properly equipped (5.3 V8 with the NHT trailering package).

Helpful Camera Views

To assist with towing, the 2022 Chevy Tahoe and Suburban offer up to 13 available camera angles. One of the most useful is Transparent Trailer View, which helps drivers virtually “see-through” a connected and compatible trailer. Additional views include a rear trailer view, a picture-in-picture side view, and a view inside a trailer when an accessory camera is connected (some camera views require an accessory camera and installation at the time of purchase).

Interior Technology

A range of Google services are standard for the Tahoe and Suburban on the LT and above. Drivers will have access to Google Assistant, Google Maps, and Google Play, in addition to Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Some of the most common vehicle functions – like climate control or infotainment – can be accessed via voice commands or the steering wheel buttons.

A larger 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster is now standard for LT and above. With four user-selectable layouts, the new cluster allows drivers to personalize the display however they wish. Like in years past, the 2022 Tahoe and Suburban will come with a built-in Wi-Fi hotspot with available 4G LTE data.

Safety Features

Front and Rear Park Assist and Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning are now standard for the 2022 Chevy Tahoe and Suburban, regardless of trim level. Also standard on every trim level is the Chevy Safety Assist package. It includes Automatic Emergency Braking, Front Pedestrian Braking, Forward Collision Alert, Following Distance Indicator, and IntelliBeam auto high beams.

GM’s Buckle to Drive system is standard across the 2022 Chevy Tahoe and Suburban lineup. Helpful for younger drivers especially, the feature prevents the Tahoe or Suburban from shifting out of park until the driver and front passenger have buckled up.

Tahoe & Suburban Warranty

Tahoe and Suburban are standard with a three-year/36,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty and a five-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty. The powertrain warranty extends to five years or 100,000 miles if you opt for the Duramax diesel. Depending on how much you drive, an extended warranty may benefit you. Before making a decision, see this comprehensive guide to Chevy’s warranty.

Pricing & Availability

The 2022 Chevy Tahoe and Suburban will enter production in October 2021. Chevrolet did not say precisely when the new Tahoe and Suburban would arrive, but it should not be too long after the start of production. The MSRP figures are still forthcoming.

As you go up through the trim levels, the Tahoe and Suburban jump in price considerably. If you are shopping for a new Tahoe, this free and easy search tool* will show you dealer inventory in your area and which dealerships offer the best prices. Likewise, this tool* will help you do the same for the Suburban. Both of those tools will help you obtain the invoice price, which is one of the best starting points for negotiation.

2022 Honda Passport: New Face, Updated Features, Rugged TrailSport Trim & More

The 2022 Honda Passport is entering the crossover segment with a new face, a host of updated features, and a rugged TrailSport version with off-road goodies and chunkier tires. Not many people know the Passport started life as a rebadged and re-engineered Isuzu Rodeo in 1993. But as traditional car buyers slowly gravitated towards midsize crossovers, Honda needed the Passport to slot between its smaller CR-V and seven-seat Pilot SUV.

The third-gen Passport came in 2019 as a five-seat version of the Pilot. For 2022, the Passport has gained some styling updates derived from the Honda Ridgeline. However, Honda has only unveiled the newest TrailSport version of the 2022 Passport, although we reckon most of the facial upgrades will carry over to the rest of the lineup.

2022 Honda Passport TrailSport

Honda claims the 2022 Passport TrailSport is a new halo for Honda light trucks, and the new Passport is the first Honda vehicle to receive the TrailSport treatment. If the name is any indication, TrailSport is for active buyers who crave a sense of adventure.

“Some may not realize the true rugged, off-road capabilities of our light trucks,” said Dave Gardner, executive vice president of National Operations, American Honda Motor Co., Inc. “Now they’re getting tough, rugged looks to match, and the addition of TrailSport will further enhance the off-road capability of our vehicles in the future.”

The Honda Passport TrailSport receives new sheet metal from the A-pillars forward. It has a new squared-off countenance with an upright front grille. The hood is unique and now has a power bulge to give the vehicle a meaner stance. Also new are the front fenders, front and rear bumpers, and updated headlights. You’ll also find a crossbar on top of the new grille to further accentuate its brutish face. Honda also increased the front and rear track by 0.40 inches (10mm) to give it a broader stance.

Other custom TrailSport features include machined 18-inch wheels, off-road tires, a silver skid plate, and orange TrailSport badging. Inside, it gets orange stitching, embroidered Trailsport logos on the seats, and all-season rubber floor liners. Also included are amber ambient lighting and custom gauge surrounds.

Standard V6 Engine

The 2022 Honda Passport has a 3.5-liter V6 with 280 horsepower and 262 lb-ft. of torque. Front-wheel drive is standard, while Honda’s excellent i-VTM4 torque-vectoring all-wheel drivetrain is standard on the TrailSport and Elite. The i-VTM4 drivetrain can send up to 70 percent of the engine’s torque to the rear wheels. It can also shift up to 100 percent of that torque between the left and right rear wheels (torque vectoring). All Passport AWD models have 8.1 inches of ground clearance and a 5,000 lbs. towing capacity. Standard across all drivetrains is a nine-speed automatic gearbox.

Generous Standard Features

Every 2022 Honda Passport has standard LED headlights, push-button start, a power tailgate, and an eight-inch infotainment touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Passport offers 50.5 cubic feet of luggage room in the back, and it even comes with multiple under-floor storage compartments to house your stuff.

Updated Safety Kit

The 2022 Passport is standard with Honda Sensing, regardless of trim level. It includes collision mitigation braking, forward collision warning, lane-keeping assist, lane departure warning, road departure mitigation, and adaptive cruise control. The rear seat and rear seatbelt reminder systems are also standard for the 2022 Honda Passport.

Honda Factory Warranty

Every new Honda Passport comes with a three-year/36,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty and a five-year/60,000-mile limited powertrain warranty. If you do a lot of driving, it might be worth looking into a Honda extended warranty. This comprehensive guide will help you make the right decision.

Pricing & Availability

Pricing for the 2022 Honda Passport remains forthcoming, but we reckon base prices to start at under $37,000. The first deliveries are arriving at U.S. Honda dealerships this winter. If you are in the market for a new Passport, this free and easy search tool* will show you which dealers in your area are offering the best price. That tool will also help you obtain the invoice price, which is a good starting point for negotiations.

Optical Illusion: CW Zon’s twin-carb Knucklehead racer

Harley knucklehead hill climber by CW Zon
When we first saw images of this bike from Custom Works Zon, we assumed it was a restoration job. And it looked like builder Yuichi Yoshizawa would have to use all his legendary skills to get the knucklehead roadworthy again.

It turned out that we were wrong. This remarkable ‘vintage racer’ is actually a ground-up build: a client commission designed to evoke the spirit of classic V-twin competition machines, dents and all.

Harley knucklehead hill climber by CW Zon
We’ve never tagged CW Zon as a retro-leaning shop, because most of their creations are sleek and highly–finished. But the best builders have a habit of throwing sudden curve balls, and so it is here. “I imagined an old racer, and imagined how it would get dirty,” Yoshizawa-san explains. “I enjoyed ‘ageing’ it.”

Virtually all the parts are custom-made. A mere handful aren’t, such as the steering neck, seat post and rear axle. Fans of classic V-twins will also clock the S&S KN93 engine—a well-engineered update of Harley’s original knuck motor.

Harley knucklehead hill climber by CW Zon
It’s got generator-style crankcases, a capacity increase from 74 to 93ci, and a stump-pulling 83 lb-ft of torque, delivered at around 3,000 rpm.

Yoshizawa has kept the S&S ignition that these engines usually employ, but not the S&S Super E carburetor. Instead, he’s chosen an unusual twin-carb setup that looks terrific, but was extremely tricky to plumb in.

With the help of local specialist Flat Head Power, CW Zon modified the cylinder heads to accept a pair of Linkert M88 carbs. Usually found on war-era Army side valve engines, they’re now sitting on handmade manifolds and operated by a custom linkage.

The hefty OHV engine is hooked up to a kicker four-speed transmission and cradled in a completely custom steel frame, which Yoshizawa built by hand.

Although it’s based on the original FL frame, Yoshizawa’s version is about four inches shorter than stock—which gives the bike a remarkably compact look.

The frame is hooked up to hill climb-style springer forks, based on the factory design used between the wars. CW Zon have modified this design, shortening it by four inches for road use, and narrowing it by around an inch too.

The front brake is typical of that used on old springers, being a twin-leading shoe drum setup. But the wheels, shod with period-correct 400-18 Firestone ANS bias ply tires, are most unusual.

Built by Sansei in Kyoto to CW Zon’s design, the rims are both 18×3.5 inches and attached to custom-machined hubs using hollow pipe spokes. The lathes were working overtime, but the effect was worth it. The rear is especially neat, with a one-off brake/sprocket drum assembly and custom linkage.

CW Zon fabricated all the bodywork in-house, although it looks like it has spent most of the past 80 years being thrashed around a paddock. The tank is even slightly dented; fitted with authentic screw-on caps, it sends gas to the twin carbs via a Pingel dual-outlet fuel valve.

A grimy and weathered flush-fitting nacelle covers the fork springs, but also hides discreet Kellermann LED lighting peeking through a pair of drilled holes. We’re not sure how effective the beam pattern will be—or the tiny matching blinkers—but maybe they’re enough to make the bike road legal in Japan.

The seat looks like a barn find, but it’s entirely new. It’s plush and comfortable, as befits a hardtail, and was crafted (and aged) by CW Zon collaborator Kurei Yonsoku.

He based it on the race seats typically used in the 1930s, and it’s braced by a stay underneath that Yoshizawa fabricated to replicates a traditional casting. The stay is hooked up to an old school shock unit for extra absorption.

All the smaller hard parts are hand-turned, from the hand and foot controls to the beautifully swept bars.

If something looks clunky or grimy, you can bet it’s deliberate. Because all this engineering would be for nothing if the bike looked like a sleek and shiny restomod.

The exhaust system, for example, is the murky monochrome color you’d expect to see on an ancient and unloved bike.

But the nondescript-looking custom pipes were first coated with high temp white paint, and then sooted up. Over time the white may peek through, but for now, it’s a million miles away from the ‘show finish’ you’d see at a Pebble Beach concours.

CW Zon enlisted the help of the Kobe paintshop Aozora Works to get these effects. The skill involved is unreal, from light weathering on the frame to real rust and gasoline streaks on the tank.

Yoshizawa gave the knuck a shakedown a few days ago at the Chirihama Sandflats event, which is the Japanese equivalent of The Race of Gentlemen in the US (or the Normandy Beach Race in France).

And what a sight that must have been. This is one of the best V-twin customs we’ve seen in the history of EXIF.
