The latest motorcycle news and customs
The Swedish electric bike company Cake takes on poaching in Africa, and Triumph cranks the Speed Triple up a notch. Plus we look at a custom Ducati Scrambler 1100 and Indian FTR 1200, and a new whip from the creative director of Super73.

Cake Kalk AP
Cake Kalk AP The Swedish electric bike manufacturer Cake has just joined forces with the Southern African Wildlife College in South Africa, to form the ‘Electric Bush Bike Anti-Poaching Coalition.’ It’s exactly what it sounds like: an initiative that uses electric bikes to combat poaching.

Anti-poaching units in Southern Africa have recently been using dirt bikes as patrol vehicles, mainly because they can reach remote locations where roads are virtually non-existent. But keeping them fueled is an issue, and they’re noisy too, making it hard to sneak up on poachers. That’s where Cake comes in.

Cake Kalk AP
They’ve developed a spin-off from their flagship Kalk model: the Kalk ‘AP.’ And they’ve partnered with the solar power company Goal Zero, to develop charging stations that can keep the electric bikes charged when off the grid.

The Kalk AP is much the same as the regular Kalk, but with a few differences. It rolls on wider 18” hoops with chunky off-road tires, and there’s extra sealing on the suspension and drivetrain components.

Cake Kalk AP
The forks have been changed from air to conventional spring for easier maintenance, and the drivetrain software has been fine-tuned for the job in hand. All the ‘plastic’ bits, like the fenders, are made from a natural fiber reinforced ‘bio composite’ material, and there’s a detachable LED headlight too.

Cake are selling a limited run of 50 Kalk ‘AP’ models as a special charity bundle. $25,000 buys two Kalk APs and one charging station—you get one bike, and the other bike and the charging station get shipped off to the Southern African Wildlife College. [Cake Kalk AP]

Indian FTR 1200 by Tank Machine
Indian FTR 1200 by Tank Machine When the team at Tank Machine were tasked with customizing a brand new FTR 1200 S for an Indian dealer in Paris, they did the sensible thing: they dug into their own stash of parts. Tank Machine specializes in designing plug-and-play parts, and have a healthy selection of bits for the FTR—so they mixed some bolt-ons with a handful of bespoke finishes, et voilà!

Indian FTR 1200 by Tank Machine
Dubbed ‘Over-Track,’ this FTR 1200 ramps up the stock bike’s tracker vibe, adding a dose of racetrack style. Add-ons include the new headlight plate, fork protectors, rear wheel covers and swingarm-mounted license plate system. Up top are new ProTaper bars, new grips and a set of bar-end mirrors.

The turn signals are particularly slick. The front pair are LEDs embedded in a set of bolt-on radiator guards, and the rear pair sit flush with the bodywork.

Indian FTR 1200 by Tank Machine
The seat upholstery is custom, and features red stitching to complement the custom paint and anodized forks. Tank Machine added pair of IXRace MK2 slip-ons too, and ceramic coated the whole exhaust system black. It’s one of those clever builds that relies on tasteful changes without going overboard—but makes a massive impact. [Tank Machine]

Ducati Scrambler 1100 by Gasoline Motor Co.
Ducati Scrambler 1100 by Gasoline Motor Co. The Ducati Scrambler 1100 is a bit of an anomaly. A ‘Scrambler’ only in name, it’s better described as a naked retro naked roadster—a concept that the crew at Australia’s Gasoline Motor Co. have pushed to the maximum here.

Gasoline’s take on the big, v-twin Scrambler is a masterclass in subtlety. Sure, the paint job’s loud, but the fabrication takes a second glance to really appreciate. Most of it’s happening at the back, where Gasoline built a new tail and seat unit, and a two-in-one box muffler that exits under the tail.

Ducati Scrambler 1100 by Gasoline Motor Co.
The muffler design and position are inspired by the iconic 2003 Ducati 999R. Best of all, Gasoline did all of this without wrecking the subframe, so that the owner can swap back to the original bench for carrying a pillion. Other hand-made bits include the headlight nacelle, and a license plate bracket that mounts off the swingarm.

Gasoline also installed CNC Racing rearsets, new LED turn signals and glassless bar-end mirrors from Motogadget. Then they nudged the speedo to sit dead center, because the offset on the stock mounting system didn’t sit well with them.

Lastly, Gasoline wrapped the Ducati in a hot-rod livery that mixes satin, gloss, matte, glitter, metallic, gradients and patterns. Shop boss Jason Leppa calls it “an infuriating mix that is somehow pleasant on the eyes.” [Gasoline Motor Co.]

Triumph Speed Triple 1200 RS
The new Triumph Speed Triple 1200 RS The bug-eyed Triumph Speed Triple has a cult following, but the British marque has made it even better for 2021.

The outgoing ‘1050’ model was no slouch, but the updated 1200 RS features an all-new 1,160 cc triple-cylinder motor. It’s good for 178 hp at 10,750 rpm, and 125 Nm at 9,000 rpm—in a package that weighs just 436 lbs (198 kilos).

Triumph Speed Triple 1200 RS
That makes the power-to-weight ratio 25% better than before, but the changes to the Speed Triple go deeper than just a simple power boost and diet. Triumph’s reduced powertrain inertia to improve engine pick-up, bumped up the redline to 11,150 rpm, and redesigned the slip and assist clutch. Despite being bigger, the new motor’s actually lighter, and more compact, than before.

Other changes include a new cast aluminum frame, and tweaks to the geometry and ergonomics. The ‘RS’ designation means top-shelf parts, so this particular Speed Triple gets fully adjustable Öhlins suspension, and sculptured Brembo Stylema brakes.

Triumph Speed Triple 1200 RS
It also has a comprehensive electronics package, with everything from a quick-shifter to a six-axis IMU to assist ABS and traction control, multiple rider modes, and smartphone integration via Triumph’s own app.

Visually, the Speed Triple 1200 RS is a lot sharper too. Triumph have stuck to the angular twin headlight vibe, but the whole arrangement feels more focused. The overall vibe is slightly more aggressive than before, and Triumph have also dropped the usual two under-seat exhaust mufflers: it’s now a single burly, low-slung unit.

Triumph Speed Triple 1200 RS
No one ever accused the Speed Triple of being boring—but this new version is faster, rowdier, better looking and lighter. Our bet? It’ll not only live up to its name, but also push the Speed Triple mythos even further. [Triumph Speed Triple 1200 RS]

Custom Super73 S2 by Chris Nelson
Super73 S2 by Chris Nelson Super73 have nailed the formula for small, accessible and fun e-bikes. Their S2 is a $2,695 pedal-assist unit with an aluminum frame, 20” wheels and a top speed of between 20 and 28 mph, depending which mode it’s in. And with its throwback mini-bike vibe, it’s a looker too.

This S2 belongs to Super73’s creative director, Chris Nelson, who’s customized it as his ideal Long Beach runabout. Yes, this is a custom e-bike… and it’s rad.

Custom Super73 S2 by Chris Nelson
Up front, Chris slipped in a chunkier front-end from another Super73 model, dropping the forks slightly to maintain the S2’s ride height. Then he raided the company’s R&D department for a set of knobby tires that they’re working on. He also added a new set of bars with Biltwell Inc. grips, and a powerful Baja Designs Squadron LED headlight.

Custom Super73 S2 by Chris Nelson
The biggest visual change is the fuel tank-styled battery: it’s moved from up top to within the frame. There’s now a full-length custom saddle resting on top, upholstered in leather and a gripper fabric by Saddlemen, complete with gel inserts. Other bits include a set of Crank Brothers pedals, fenders from other Super73 bikes, a custom-made cup holder and a Tiger bike lock.

It’s a slick build, wrapped in an even slicker paint job: a high gloss green-grey shot by a local hot rod painter. [Super73 S2 | Images by Garrett King]

Automoblog Book Garage: Billy F Gibbons: Rock + Roll Gearhead

  • Affiliate Disclosure: Automoblog and its partners may be compensated if you purchase this book. Our Book Garage series showcases what every enthusiast should add to their library.

Although first published in 2005, Billy F Gibbons: Rock + Roll Gearhead received an expanded re-release in 2020 for the 50th anniversary of ZZ Top. The book is packed full of custom guitars and hotrods that are now the stuff of legend.

As the title would lead you to believe, this is a book about all the cool stuff Billy Gibbons owns. Yes, that would be the same Billy Gibbons – sorry, Billy F Gibbons these days – from ZZ Top. Obviously, a working musician builds up a guitar collection whether they want to or not, but if you’re a guy like Gibbons, your guitars will be inspired by hotrods. Gibbons is a noted gearhead, being one of the first people to bring Boyd Coddington into a wider public view, who later was the star of American Hot Rod on TLC.

Billy F Gibbons: Rock + Roll Gearhead could have been a self-serving ego trip, but it’s much better executed and with a lot more depth than that.

The Lotto Garage

Look at the situation this way: Say you get rich. And I mean real rich. Like, cashed in your Microsoft stock options, and now you’re worth tens-of-millions of dollars, rich. What would you do with all that money? Well, I know what I, and any other self-respecting gearhead would do: Buy cars! Lots of very cool cars. Carl Anthony (our editor here at Automoblog) and I have had this discussion many times. We even have a name for it: we call it “The Lotto Garage,” because the only way this will happen for a couple of automotive writers like us is to win the Lotto.

If this were to happen, at some point, the temptation would be to at least document what you’ve got. And hey, since you’ve got more cash on hand than the nation of Burundi, why not put all your cool stuff into a cool book. You can sell the book and, most likely, even give a few copies away to show how rich and “on fleek” you are. Gibbons could have done this, but this book seems more sincere than that.

Larger Than Life

Despite all his outsized persona and buffoonish style, Gibbons actually knows a lot about guitars and cars and seems like the sort of guy who’d be a friend of mine (I know lots of musicians, and there’s tons of overlap with the gearhead community). It’s just that Gibbons is “always on,” and it always seems like he’s playing a part. Maybe he is. Maybe he just doesn’t know when to stop or even wonders what happened to the original Billy Gibbons from all those years ago.

If he’d calm down, he strikes me as the sort of guy you could riff with over beers and talk about Von Dutch and Howlin’ Wolf and Ed Iskenderian and Lightnin’ Hopkins. But I digress.

Billy F Gibbons: Rock + Roll Gearhead: Diving In

First off, it’s a very nice book. I mean very nice. The photography, a mix of color and black-and-white, is top-notch. As photographer David Perry does his thing behind the camera, Gibbons joins author Tom Vickers, a longtime music industry pro who has worked as a journalist, publicist, producer, and an A&R rep. The written content, just like the photography, is entertaining, informative, and as idiosyncratic as the book’s main subject.

Billy F. Gibbons: Rock + Roll Gearhead is divided into three parts: The Life, The Cars, and The Guitars. The last two are self-explanatory, but The Life is about just that. It’s about how young Mr. Gibbons went from being a Texas kid fascinated with music to being a working musician to being a bonafide rock star.

Cars, Guitars & Little Details

Gibbons embraces the little details, and it’s what makes this book so entertaining. Some may dismiss it as minutia not worth mentioning, but talking about string gauges is as enjoyable as talking about valve lash adjustments at length. Oh sure, you and I and every other enthusiast (both music and automotive) could dwell on that stuff for hours (just ask our ex-lovers), but the general public would rightfully run for the hills.

Still, everything is there in Billy F Gibbons: Rock + Roll Gearhead. Guitars in the book include the ’59 Les Paul sunburst known as “Pearly Gates” and the “Furry One” of MTV notoriety, along with cars like the CadZZilla, Kopperhed, and Eliminator, the latter being one of the most famous cars in all of ZZ Top’s history.

Eliminator car from Billy F Gibbons: Rock + Roll Gearhead, published by Motorbooks.
The Eliminator, a 1933 Ford coupe, appeared on the cover of ZZ Top’s 1983 album of the same name. The album contained many now recognizable hits, including Gimme All Your LovinGot Me Under PressureLegsTV Dinners, and Sharp Dressed Man

Rock + Roll Gearhead Makes a Great Gift

It’s worth noting the book is nicely bound and comes with a slipcase. It’s orange, which might be glaring to some bookshelves, but it really stands out, kind of like Gibbons himself. So that counts for something.

While this is the type of book every car and music lover should have, if you happen to be looking for an upcoming birthday or anniversary gift, then Billy F Gibbons: Rock + Roll Gearhead will not disappoint. You can grab it now on Amazon.

2022 BMW M5 CS Sedan: The Most Powerful BMW Production Vehicle Yet.

BMW just rolled out the new 2022 M5 CS Sedan, and man, oh man, does this guy look right and proper. It’s the quickest and most powerful BMW production vehicle ever. Ever. It cranks out 627 horsepower and 553 lb-ft. of torque and, at 230 lbs. lighter than an M5 Competition, you can expect a zero to 60 time of 2.9 seconds and a top speed of 190 mph. Yowzer!

2022 BMW M5 CS Sedan: Those Numbers Again

The “M” in BMW stands for “Motor,” and to hammer that point home all you have to do is realize that the M5 CS Sedan is powered by a 4.4-liter M TwinPower turbo V8. That 627 horsepower represents a bump of 10 over the M5 Competition. And the torque figures are a staggering 553 lb-ft. from 1,800 to 5,950 rpm for a 90 rpm wider band than the M5 Competition.

Given that near-tug-like amount of torque is found in a friggin four-door makes me shake my head with excitement, laugh like a maniac, and make a grab for the keys!

Other noteworthy engine specs include the 7,200 rpm redline, the high-pressure direct injection for precise fuel atomization and engine response, the liquid-to-air intercooling for the two turbochargers, and an oil system with two pumps to make sure the M5 CS is as competent on the track as it is on the street.

 M xDrive &  Active M Differential

The power heads south from das mill and through an eight-speed M Steptronic automatic transmission with Drivelogic and thence onto the M xDrive all-wheel drive system. Bang, 60 mph in just 2.9 seconds (0.2 seconds quicker than the M5 Competition) and BANG top speed of 190 mph!

Yes, it’s all-wheel drive but BMW assures us gearheads that the M xDrive system is rear-biased while distributing the 553 ft-lbs. of torque between front and rear axles via an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch. The Active M Differential further optimizes power between the rear wheels for maximum grip and lateral dynamics. Selectable xDrive modes include 4WD, 4WD Sport, and 2WD, while the Dynamic Stability Control system can be adjusted between three settings: DSC ON, MDM (M Dynamic Mode), and DSC OFF.

Gearheads will switch to DSC OFF and put it into 2WD, just saying.

Exhaust System & M Sound

The exhaust system is a fancy-schmancy, dual-branch, electric flap-controlled deal with quad stainless-steel tips that “amplify the V8’s soundtrack while giving the option for quieter operation when necessary.” The exhaust characteristics are changed depending on the selected mode: EFFICIENT, SPORT, or SPORT+

With SPORT+, it sounds like a few Bavarian hot-rodders had to explain themselves at some point: “Ehrlicher Offizier, es klang für mich nicht so laut!

2022 BMW M5 CS Sedan: Chassis & Suspension

Although the engine is magnificent, it’s worth noting that BMW has seen to the chassis and suspension tuning as well. Built off the M5 Competition, the M5 CS features stiffer engine mounts, 10 percent firmer springs, increased front negative camber, a firmer rear anti-roll bar, tow-link ball-joint mounts, and an overall 0.2-inch lower ride height.

As with the engine, the chassis features computer enhancements that are driver-controlled. There are COMFORT, SPORT, and SPORT+ driving modes for the M5 CS Sedan. COMFORT mode is for everyday driving, SPORT reduces wheel and body movements, and SPORT+ maximizes performance on smooth asphalt (i.e. your local track).

2022 BMW M5 CS Sedan Braking System

The standard M Carbon ceramic brakes feature six-piston fixed front calipers and single-piston rear floating calipers with M logos. The M Carbon ceramic brakes will provide better thermal stability, resistance to fade, and improved wear while also dropping weight by 51 lbs. compared to the standard M Compound brakes found on the M5 Competition.

Also, this is the first application of red calipers for BMW’s carbon ceramic brakes if that means anything to you. Gold calipers are available as a no-cost option if you want to be tacky.

Luxurious & Sporty Interior

The interior, exclusive to the 2022 BMW M5 CS, looks like a cross between a modern German apartment and a spaceship. There are four comfy seats in black Merino leather with Mugello red accents and contrast stitching. The driver and front passengers get new heated and electrically adjustable M carbon bucket seats with aggressive side-bolstering, integrated headrests, and illuminated M5 logos for a bit of flash. Speaking of flash, the headrests of all four seats are imprinted with a map of the Nürburgring Nordschleife, which was integral to the M5 CS’s development.

The M Alcantara steering wheel has a perforated section with a red stripe at the 12 o’clock position and carbon-fiber shift paddles with matching red trim in the cut-outs and back panels. Alcantara is also used for the headliner, natch.

The center console cover is black merino leather with red double stitching. You’ll note the lack of a traditional armrest and the armrest area tray to reduce weight further. Red “CS” badging can be seen on the instrument panel and between the rear bucket seats. The M seat belts feature BMW M tri-color stitching. The “M5” badge also appears on the velour M floor mats.

2022 BMW M5 CS Sedan: Color Options

And let’s take note of the colors you can get for your 2022 BMW M5 CS Sedan. The M5 CS is available in a standard Brands Hatch grey metallic with two optional BMW Individual colors – Frozen Brands Hatch grey metallic and Frozen Deep Green metallic. And I’ve got to say that Frozen Deep Green metallic is a real head-turner. Green is not even close to my favorite color, and that’s what I would go with for my M5 CS.

Pricing & Availability

BMW will be making the M5 CS Sedan for one model year only, just for 2022. Starting MSRP will be (gulp) $142,000 plus $995 destination (gulp!). Yeah, I know, that is a lot of cash, but the possibility of smoking your sports car driving friends with a four-door might make that more attractive. You can pick up your 2022 BMW M5 CS Sedan in the second half of 2021.
